Upgrade Advice for Larger Pulleys

When moving to a larger pulley wheel, follow these principles to avoid clearance problems:

  1. Top (guide) pulley: It should be smaller than the lower pulley. If it is too big, it will hit the cassette. Upgrade by a maximum of 1 tooth over your current guide pulley.
  2. Lower (tension) pulley: You can go 1–2 teeth larger than your current size. A larger wheel spins more easily and can improve riding efficiency.
  3. Single chainring setups: A narrow-wide tooth pulley is recommended for better performance.

Example: If your current guide pulley is 11T, the largest replacement is 12T — 13T would be too big. If your tension pulley is 11T, you can use 12T or 13T.
